Name	Rucker Mauldin
	Rucker Mauldin was born in Virginia (or maybe North Carolina), not Maryland because that was where his Father and Grandfather lived (Ambrose and Christopher Smith). His mother, Elizabeth Mauldin, grew up in Spotsylvania, VA. I believe that she knew Rucker’s Dad, Christopher Smith when she was a child because they lived in the same general area. Rucker’s grandfather, Ambrose Joshua Smith, was Constable (sheriff) of Louisa Co, VA and records prove he owned over 4000 acres of land just above Charlottesville in the 1740s. They moved to Chatham, North Carolina – not sure which year – so it’s possible Rucker was born in Chatham, North Carolina because Christopher moved there. - Ed Mauldin

	Although my records show otherwise, I now believe that Rucker was born in 1767, not 1760. His records (and tombstone at Pickin’s Chapel, SC) were falsified by a genealogist to gain entry for a lady into DAR. There is no record of Rucker having fought in the Revolutionary War and the DAR no longer recognizes him as a qualifying ancestor. - Ed Mauldin

Notes	Research of Linda Smith Cheek Christopher Smith and Elizabeth Mauldin were not married. Elizabeth was a sister to Mary Mauldin wife of Christopher Smith. Christopher and Elizabeth had illegitimate son Rucker who went by the name of Rucker Mauldin. It was said that Rucker Mauldin knew who his father was. Christopher and wife Mary Mauldin Smith also had a son named Rucker Smith who died 1805 in Edgefield District SC and lived near Rucker Mauldin. Rucker Mauldin descendants test same yDNA as Christopher Smith. This is the line of Neil Smith and I thought it was my line for many years until YDNA came out. I do not research this line anymore. The Smiths and many other Louisa Co Virginians moved to Chatham, NC area – not sure which year. Rucker’s grandfather, Ambrose Joshua Smith died there in an Indian raid in 1758. There are land records to prove that Christopher was there also. Then, Christopher moved to Pickins (Anderson), SC area. That is where Rucker met and married Susannah Miller. I have them married in 1784 (she would have only been 15) but I can’t prove that. - Ed Mauldin

I believe Rucker’s father was Christopher Smith and that his mother was Elizabeth Mauldin, sister of Christopher’s wife, Mary. I can prove that by my DNA match to other “Smiths,” and I also have a letter that semi-proves my theory that Rucker’s mother never married so had to give him her last name – “Mauldin.” - Ed Mauldin

Which Smith? When?

Here’s my theory. On 67 Marker YDNA Test, I am only two markers different from Brooke Smith. If I follow Brooke’s line back to Charles Smith, I see a brother, Ambrose Joshua Smith who moved to Chatham, NC where several Mauldins (including Rucker) lived, so I am immediately suspecting Ambrose as a potential ancestor. Then, I see that Ambrose has a Son, Christopher, who happened to marry Mary Mauldin. So now, I have something to work with.

Now the story gets interesting.

I have Bible entries showing my lineage through to Rucker Mauldin, but no documentation of Rucker’s ancestors. I know from a letter written to the respected SC genealogist, Leonardo Andrea, that Rucker’s son Laban, a respected member of the SC House of Representatives, said he was the only Grandchild of a Grandmother that never married. Thus, I started looking for unmarried SC women in the Pendleton area, and I find that Christopher Smith’s wife, Mary Mauldin, had an unmarried sister, Elizabeth Mauldin. The rest is 2+2.

But, I’m still looking for other evidence. It’s possible my DNA could run through another Smith. I’m still researching. Any help will ne appreciated.
