      Hardy Smith
      Hardy Smith came to Laurens County in the early 1800's. Hardy Smith (1757-1842) served in the North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution enlisting from Cumberland County, North Carolina. (See Laurens County History Volume 1, Joseph Daniel Smith). At the end of the war, he and his brothers, English and Stephen, migrated to Georgia . English settled in Washington County. Hardy married his third wile, Rebecca Thompson, in Washington County on November 16, 1796. Shortly thereafter, Hardy and his wife moved to Laurens County and settled on highs Creek east of the Oconee River , Here through diligence and perseverance he became a successful planter. Hardy and Rebecca Thompson Smith had three sons, Thompson, Hardy II, and Lofton.
