Jonathan Smith was my gr-gr-great-grandfather. (I painted the portrait of him that you are kindly using. Thank you.)
He had eight children: Louisa, Thomas R., Calvin, Nancy Ann, Reuben, Molcy, William D., and Isaac. Isaac was the oldest (b. 1824) and left home before the 1850 census. He is in the 1850 census with his wife, Arena "Reiny" Jordan (her name is misspelled on several records).
I cannot prove that Isaac is the oldest brother, that Jonathan Smith is his father, or that Jonathan Smith is my ggg-grandfather. What do you suggest? The Montgomery County, NC, Courthouse has burned three times~~no hope for any help from there. Isaac's four brothers served in the War Between the States, and I would like to honor them in the United Daughters of the Confederacy. I'd also like to "be kin to" the rest of my gg-grandfather's family.
Thanks -- Gail
