Birth	Regarding Nehemiah’s birthplace the documentation I have about Nehemiah not being from Newcastle comes from the published family newsletter“News of the Nehemiah Smith Clan”’ volume one, number two, March 1992. These newsletters along with other family papers of historical importance are being held at the Stonington historical library in Stonington Connecticut. The records there have been checked, and it is believed that this widely held misunderstanding results from the fact that a book on the family history published in 1889 discusses at length the cost of arms officially recognized in 1561 as that of a John Smith, mayor of New Castle. Readers falsely concluded that this establish that Nehemiah descended from the smiths of Newcastle. There simply is no documentation to support that. It is possible that Nehemiah’s nephew, Edward, may have been born in Nottingham, but that has yet to be established. If so, that might get me close. He also had a brother named John, so as you can imagine, searching for the right “John Smith” is like searching for a needle in a haystack.
