    Conflation with Lafayette Folis Smith:

Ancestry Trees uniformly list Green W Lafayette Smith as Lafayette Folis Smith. Green W L Smith's record appears to have been conflated with another Lafayette Smith.

One possibility is Lafayette Smith, son of Abel Smith b. 1800, shown age 18 (b. in abt. 1832) in the 1850 US Census for Russell County, AL. A headstone application dated 13 Nov 1929 for a Lafayette Smith, with the middle initial "F" added by the approver, was submitted by Lee A Smith residing in Beaverton, Lamar County, AL. This person appears to be Lee Allen Smith 1880-1973, son of Joseph Cater Smith 1827-1896 and Mary Wells Baker Smith 1848-1934. Joseph Cater Smith's parents were Solomon C Smith b. 1803 and Sarah Frances Barnes b. 1804. Abel Smith b. 1800 was married to Katherine Barnes 1807-1855. The match of these surnames and age similarity suggests that the headstone application might have been for the son of Abel Smith. A Confederate prisoner Lafayette F Smith is listed in a Journal of Accounts for prisoners at Rock Island Barracks, page 102, dated February 29, 1964.

Regardless, the Pike County, GA marriage record for Juda Ann Tarver dated 18 Nov 1853 makes it clear that her groom was a man named Green W L Smith. Multiple subsequent US Census records for Green and Juda reveal that the "L" in the name Green W L Smith stands for Lafayette.
