We, Smithsworldwide.org, are the official Smith/Schmidt/Smythe/Smyth/Smidt and all variations for every location in the world. We did a merge several years ago of 3 regional Smith projects, with all members, into one master project. These 3 regional projects were Smith Connections-Northeastern Smiths, Southern Smiths and Worldwide Smiths. We are not an umbrella project; 2 of these regional projects, since they were already merged into the one master project, are no longer listed at FamilyTreeDNa as data from all 3 projects are incorporated into the Official Smith project

FamilyTreeDNA has a policy of not having competing projects.

If after searching our list of projects, you find that you would like to become an administrator and propose a new project not currently represented, you may fill out an application. FTDNA has a firm policy against creating new projects that overlap with the themes and goals of existing projects. If you are considering submitting an application to start a new project, please make sure that we do not have an existing project with the same theme. To search our current projects, use the "Project Search" on the right side of the page. If you find a project with an overlapping theme, we suggest you contact the current project administrator to find out if you can help manage the project.

There are at least two regional projects at FTDNA. Smith Connections-Northeastern, which is a strictly regional project for those with connections in certain northeastern states in the United States only  continues on as a separate, unaffiliated regional project.  There is also another, Smiths of Abbeville SC, which is a regional project strictly for those who have Smith connections in that district. If you fit specifically into either of those criteria for those regional projects, you might also want to join them, keeping in mind that we cover all locations. To compare your DNA data with ALL Smith/Schmidt/Smythe/Smyth etc, as we are the only project for ALL Smith/Schmidt/Smyth/Smythe, etc  please join the Smith Official DNA Project.
