The earliest information I have about him is his marriage in 1899 in Shettleston, Scotland to Catherine Madden Tallan. The marriage certificate indicates his parents were Michael Smith (deceased) and Margaret Killochan. I'm highly suspect of the mother's last name having been mistranscribed as it is a Scottish name and William was born in Ireland. I don't know how William got to Glasgow but it was common for people in Ireland and Scotland to travel freely between countries. I can't find any information about his father. I've had some leads about his mother, many of which appear to have been wrong. There was a suggestion in a genealogy forum that his mother may not have been married and that he may not have known his father's actual name, though continued with Smith as his last name, which is an interesting theory. I've been unable to find a birth or baptism record which makes sense, and there is difficulty with searching parish records in Ireland particularly before 1864. William's time in Scotland is well documented through Scotland's People records until he and his family immigrated to Canada in 1920, where he died in Toronto in 1939. Wife Catherine b. 1872 died in Toronto in 1944, children, all born in Scotland, were Isabella b 1900, Margaret b. 1901, James b. 1902 (my grandfather), and Rose b. 1908. |
