George Duncan Smith -Need help on sources-Taking a second look
George Duncan Smith Posted by smithsworldwide in Smith Mystery O Day on June 6, 2024 Views:(217) Replies (0) PostID:3542 Please Login/Register to reply to this topic Taking a second look at George Duncan Smith b 17 Aug 1828 died 27 Jun 1862 at Richmond, Henrico Co VA, married Mary Frances Cardin on 9 Sep 1851 at Hawkins Co TN. Although he has said to have been born in North Carolina (Robeson Co), the census records contracdict this and I can find no instance of him being named in supposed father Duncan Richard Smith's will. Duncan Richard Smith is found in the 1850 Robeson Co NC census at #254:254 Back to George Duncan who seems to have been listed in the census either as George OR Duncan 1850 Hawkins Co #18:18 George Smith 23 Tennessee Apparently moved in 1851 to Walker Co GA where he is found at 1493:1435 as Duncan Smith 32 TN along with wife Mary Frances and children James L, George A and Robert A If these 2 census records are correct, he was not born in North Carolina but Tennesssee. (Note that, interestingly, there is a Richard Smith in 1850 Hawkins Co TN next door to George-is it possible that the *Richard* was conflated and attached to the wrong parent? That Richard might be the same one found in 1830 Hawkins Co TN with 1 m 5-9, 1 m 10-14, 2 m 20-29 1 m 40-49, 1 f 5-9, 2 f 30-39. On the 1840 census a Richard Smith is on the same page as Robert Carden ) So, what we are looking for is a source record for Duncan Richard Smith that shows definitely that George Duncan Smith is his son OR other record showing that. is the case. The Smith DNA Project has 2 people in it that stem from George Duncan Smith. One member did an autosomal test but not YDNA; the second did YDNA (results not in yet) but not autosomal so cannot compare the 2 kits. If you are a male Smith that is from George Duncan Smith OR from Duncan Richard Smith, please consider doing a YDNA test for comparison. |
