Peter Smith is the youngest son of Neil Smith & Isabella, who lived in Glendaruel, Argyllshire, Scotland. Neil Smith occupied a farm in Gendaruel, Argyllshire, held by his forebers for several generations, his wife's name was Isabella, who pre-deceased him by many years, he late in life remarried, he died in Port Bannatyne, Bute about 1830, around the age of 86 or 87. He & Isabella had 4 sons & 2 daughters. Duncan the eldest son managed the farm until his father gave it up on account of advancing age, after which Duncan obtained a position in the Revenue Service. John the 2nd son emigrated to Charleston, South Carolina. William the 3rd son emigrated to Canada with his young wife, a Miss Maclehose, of Glasgow. He & his wife died at an early age, and thier children, Neil & Janet, were sent home to their mother's relatives. Thier youngest son Peter Smith b. about 1781 went to Glasgow, where he established a business in the flax trade. In June 1801 Glasgow, he married Euphemia MacKay, the only child of Robert MacKay of the Clan Abrach & his wife Jane MacKay, daughter of Dr. John MacKay of Falside. |
