  1. Jeremiah Smith (I84635) b. 1780 was probably actually born in Wilkes County, NC. Ashe was not created until 1799 from Wilkes Co., NC, 19 years later.
  2. Susannah Maynard (I84636) wife of Jeremiah b. 1804. Although census records are not always correct, the following census records have her birth date
1850 census - 1804
1860 census - 1800
1870 census – 1803
1880 census – 1800
Her birthdate has been 1800-1804
Her parents are thought to be James Maynard and Chaney Smith.
They were married 10 March 1807 in Wilkes Co., NC Marriage Bond. Others have changed the year on the marriage, but the Governor of North Carolina, Nathaniel Alexander is on the document. He served from Dec 1805 – Nov 1807. Therefore, I do not believe Chaney Smith is her mother. James was married previously because in the 1810 census  2 years later they’re a couple with 6 children. Is Susan’s mother the 1st wife or is there another wife in between? So, Jeremiah did not marry his niece.
  1. Jeremiah died between 1861-1865. Pike Co., KY Tax records show him in 1861 with 3 children between 6-18, There are no known tax records for 1862-1864 (Civil War). In 1865 Jeremiah (Jr.) is listed (served in militia) but not Jeremiah Sr. In 1866 Susan is listed with 3 children 6-20.
  2. Jeremiah was the ONLY Smith listed in the in the 1823 tax list of Pike Co., KY. Was he the only one who was found that year?
  3. There is one land transaction with Jeremiah and Susan Smith with Isaac Smith. Book A1 Page 492 Pike Co., KY After further review This Isaac Smith is from GRP-R-M269-219.
  4. I have created a list of records on to further research for Jeremiah Smith. If interested in browsing through records in Ashe County, NC, let me know and I will send you the list.
