In 1870 Oceana, Wyoming County, West Virginia, there is a Joseph L Smith b c 1824 OH married to a Jane Smith age 23.
1870 Oceana, Wyoming County, West Virginia
#69
Joseph L Smith 46 OH
Jane Smith 23 KY
Christopher C Smtih 13 KY
Edward Smith 3 WV
George W Smith 2 WV
Alice A L M Smith 10.12  WV

From Edward Smith's marriage certificate, parents are Joseph Smith and Jane Chapman (marriage to Lydie Murphy)

Are there living descendants of this Edward?

The Christopher C Smith in this census is too old (born c 1857 in KY) to be Jane Chapman's son. Jane Chapman was born in Kentucky and can be found in 1860 Pike County KY census in her father Edward Chapman's household. Note that the first child of Joseph L Smith and Jane Chapman is named Edward, born c 1867.

In 1860, the Edward Chapman family, including Jane Chapman,  lives right next to the Joseph L Smith family, in which Joseph is married to Sarah Hunt. Joseph L Smith and Sarah Hunt's first child, on the 1860 census, is C C Smith b c 1858 KY -Christopher Smith age 13 in 1870 Logan Co WV census with mom Sarah Hunt Smith but no Joseph L Smith

by the 1870 Logan Co WV census, Joseph L Smith not being there would indicate he died before 1870 or at least before the 1870 census took place. Could this Joseph L Smith be the same one that is found in Wyoming Co WV in 1870 with Jane Chapman? The 1870 census of Wyoming Co WV in which Joseph L Smith appears was taken ? July 1870.  Same with the census of Hardy Township, Logan County, West Virginia in July 1870 in which Sarah Hunt Smith and her children appear, sans Joseph L. Next door to Sally Hunt Smith is Moses Chapman. Moses Chapman is a son of Edward Chapman, father to the Jane Chapman Smith in the Wyoming County household in 1870.

Could the Christopher Columbus Smith have been enumerated twice, be a son of the same Joseph L Smith?  Again, in the household with Jane Chapman, she is too young to be his mother. Who is this Joseph L Smith?

If anyone has information to add, including sources on this Joseph L Smith b OH and Jane Chapman Smith, please comment.

From a DNA standpoint, if there are any living kin from one of the children of the Joseph L Smith-Jane Chapman family  please join the project.
