There are two different YDNA lines that cross at about this point. One is R-M269 YDNA, Group GRP-R-M269-50  from Christopher Smith of Rhode Island, the second is Elijah Smith b 1761 d 1853 of Rhode Island who married Mary Smith, daughter of Rufus Smith and Mary Taft. 
3 descendantts of Elijah Smith have I-M253 YDNA, are in Group GRP-I-M223-14 and have a number of matches for Herrington., parents, interestly, are said to be, in one case, Joshua Smith b 1732 Providence, RI who married Amey Herendeen OR parents are a Joshua Smith m Anne Tripp. One problem with this is that the marriage of Smith/Herendeen is shows, via proof, to be 5 July 1750 and Amey Herendeen is said to have died in 1811. Therefore the Joshua Smith that married Anne Tripp, daughter of Edward Tripp and Susanna Ames can't be the same Smiths' wife as she is said to have died in 1784. 

Note that there is an Oliver Smith b 1757 m Eleather Herendeen, also said to be son of Joshua Smith m Anne Tripp. 

So, the core problem may be here, this may be two different families. Does anyone have source information to help sort this out? Would also like YDNA testers for any known children, to definitely include male Smith descendants for YDNA, for Joshua Smith m Amey Herendeen (Harrington)
