AUGUSTUS SMITH.
Augustus Smith, eldest son of Dow Smith, was born near New Haven. Connecticut, October 11, 1802 and came to this section in 1819 locating on the farm recently owned by L. D. Hall, in the town of Van Buren. and later moved to the farm south of the village, now owned by Willard I. Talmage, where he remained until his death. Mr. Smith did much toward clearing the country in the town of Van Buren and did space permit, many incidents might be related of his early pioneer life. He learned the shoemaker's trade and for many years worked at his trade at night, being engaged in his agricultural pursuits by day. Mr. Smith was twice married, taking for his first wife Martha Howe, his second wife being Julia A. Peckham. Of his children three are still living: Mrs. L. E. Warner, Maynard Smith and Miles Smith, all of this place. He was a member of the M. E. church, one of its trustees, and a most generous contributor towards it and was one of the building committee of the present church. He also helped draw the timbers for the first M. E. church. His death occurred July 23. 1880, the burial being in Riverside cemetery. Mr. Smith was a particularly active man, full of that vigor which accomplishes worthy objects.
