    • Research of Linda Smith Cheek--John Nuthall b. 1618 Rocheford, Essex Co England d. July 1667 at Cross Manor St Mary's Co., MD m. 1 June 1642 in England Rebecca Bright of Great Warley Essex Co d/o Robert Bright m. 2nd Jan\Feb 1644 in Northampton Co VA Elizabeth Bacon b. ca 1609 England d. 1653\60 widow of Dr John Holloway of Northampton Co VA--she had a child by her 1st m., Pricilla Holloway who m. William Stevens.m. 3rd 12 Sept 1660 Hungar's Parish, Northampton Co VA, Jane Johnson who died by 1663.

In the latter part of 1651 William and Elizabeth Gaskins accused Elizabeth Nuthall of adultery. They were found guilty of slander in the Court of Northampton and subjected to fines and severe lashings (Northhampton VA Wills, Deeds and Orders)

Deposition of Levina Twisden of St Marys Co aged about 71 years in 1720 stated that she knew John Nuthall the great grandfather of Brent Nuthall and that when she came into the country which was bourt fifty four years ago (1666) the said John Nuthall the great grandfather lived on the land called the Cross Manor where on he died about 53 years ago last July (July 1667).

Although he traveled to Maryland in his capacity as trader, it is well documented in Northampton Co VA records that he was living in VA as late as 1661. On 9 Aug 1661 John Nuthall of Northampton Co VA now being in England purchased two manors, Cornewalleys Crosse of 2,000 acres and St Elizabeth;s also of 2,000 acres plus 200 acres of land on St Inigoes Creek called Nuthall all in St Mary's County MD along with servants, goods, chattels,
cattle and other things from Thomas Cornwallis who had apparently returned to England to live.

Inventory of John Nuthalls estate is listed in Maryland and Virginia Colonials. The first documentation of his presence in Virginia was found in Northampton Co VA from the deposition of Capt William Jones on 18 July 1664: about 35 or 36 years ago while trading with the Indians on Chesapeake Bay near the Potomoke River found Nutwell a boy and servant who had run away from his master Huth Hays of Accomacke Co on the Eastern Shore, Capt Jones traded a hoe to the Indians for the boy and trapping him to the hallyard returned him to Hays--MD and VA Colonials by Doliante.

The earliest surviving record of John Nuthall who died 1667 at Cross Manor, St Mary's County, MD was found in the wills of his grandmother Margaret__Taynter Nuttall Joslin who d. 1619 and her last husband Thomas Joslin of Rocheford County Essex who d. 1606.
