    • Based on Linger book "...Great Grandfather William Smith had previously lived near Gaston on the present [Ralph] Shifflette property. His wife died there early in the winter of 1812 and she is buried there on the upper side of the main Highway Route 33. Great Grandmother Smith's maiden name was Kyger and she is said to have been very blonde and beautiful. Her death was a terrible loss to him from which he never fully recovered. It is thought she died in childbirth. I have been told, although I have never seen them myself, that there are two very very old grave markers up on the hill. It is also said that a large tree grew up in the middle of her grave." Son William T born 1809. William Smith remarried 1815. Also, from Jason Henry Smith book, "She was buried in the old Shifflet burying ground just above the in the W.Va. State Road #5 where the county road from Curtis Run intersects the State road just above Gaston, the burying ground is on a small flat of ground overlooking the road." Betty Ann Nicholson of Hackers Creek Pioneer Descendents wrote the following cemetery description to the author by email on 25 May 2010 notes: "This cemetery is known as the Bush Cemetery and is located 1/4 mile from Horner, Lewis Co., WV on US. 33/119. It was established as a burying ground in 1831. The tombstones were read 18 Jul 1937. William Smith nor his wife are included in this listing which means there was no readable tombstone. They could however be buried in the cemetery. Molly Lamb, our custodian here at the Library, puts the Veterans Flags on this Cemetery each year for Memorial Day. She says that a huge tree was growing on one of the graves but it rotted and fell several years ago.
