  • Notes
    • Research of Linda Smith Cheek--1801, Jun 17 -- Land Grant #1923, Moore County, NC
William Smith Senr. received a 50 acre Land Grant located Southeast of Cabbin Creek adjoining the plantation where his father did live and John Cagle. George Cagle and William Smith were chain carriers. [There is confusion about whose father this refers to). The land was originally entered by James Williams in 1796 and the entry references including his Father improvement where his Father lives. The purchase price was ultimately not paid and William Smith re-entered it in 1799. The "Father's plantation" would seem to refer to James Williams father, George Williams, who resided nearby. But then in 1807, William Smith deeded all rights to this tract to George Cagle except the grave yard where his father is buried." William Smith father, William Smith, purchased land adjoining this tract in 1769 from David Cagle.]

John Caygills, Plantation".John (Cagle) was situated at the forks of Bear and Cabin Creeks (where he remained until his death in 1799).David was situated on Flat Creek, which apparently was a small tributary of either Bear or Cabin Creek, (NC) David's survey, of 100 acres does not seem to border directly on any previously owned land, and county, seems to have been sparsely populated at that early date.David made his Land Entry and received his Warrant for Survey on April 21, 1764, made his Survey on July 5, 1764, and received his land Grant on April 25, 1767, as recorded on Land Grant Book No.23, page 24.In 1769, David sold his track of land to William Smith, and moved westward to what is now Cabarrus County, North Carolina.
David is known to have ties to three North Carolina Regions:(1) Old Rowan County, 1760, and perhaps also 1750's.Probably lived somewhere along Deep River, either in Randolph or Guilford, was on the tax list sometime in the 1760's with son John, (2) Old Cumberland County, had land patent at forks of Bear and Cabin Creeks in1767, which he sold in 1769. (3) Cabarrus County, then part of Mecklenburg, had land entry in 1779, maybe died there in 1793.

(LSC--this land wound up in Moore Co. NC)

ALSO NOTE BY LINDA SMITH CHEEK
The confusion is that Wm Sr was Wm Jr as Sr died and he took the title SR.

Indenture made 20 March 1749, between Mary Smith and William Smith of Brunswick County, and David Sims of same, £28, 100a, Rattlesnake Creek. Signed William Smith (bhm) and Sarah Smith (bhm). Wit: Sampson Lanier, Edward Wesson, William Johnson. Court 28 March 1750, Indenture and Memorandum acknowledged by William and Mary Smith.
      Deed Book 4, Page 135.

NOTE by Linda---this deed was between William the son and his mother Mary and this Wm one married Sarah Brewer. dated 1749 and William and Sarah did not have a son at this time. The Wm m. Jenny b. 1755 which was 6 years after his birth 1749? so not their son either.

Note by Linda--The William Smith b. 1755 m. Jean "Jenny" Cagle were Quakers to York SC for a while or just attend the church? with Drury Smith most likely a brother to Drury.
