  • Notes
    • Bryant Smith served in the North Carolina militia during the American Revolution and submitted a pension application from his residence i Marshall County, Alabama in 1845. Information from the application indicated that he was born near Winchester, Virginia in 1762, moved to North Carolina with his family when a child, and then went to Hawkins County, Tennessee before coming to Marshall County about 1832. during his time in North Carolina, he lived for an unspecified period with his father in law in Surry County until the house there burned. In his Guilford County 1805 will, Richard Mendenhall makes reference to the land Bryant Smith lives on. Bryant and wife, Molly were still alive in 1850 in Marshall County, but I havent found either on later censuses. Evidently, his wife was the daughter of Peter Bryant, a kinsman of Bryant Smith's mother. Peter Bryant migrated to and lived for a while in Randolph, and was a chain bearer with Alexander Smith on David Smith Sr. 300 acre survey of Nov. 11, 1779. Peter Bryant moved to Surry County after 1797 and left a will there, dated and probated in 1804. The will specified children but did not name them. Bryant and Molly Smith probably had numerous childre, based on census records of Randolph County for 1800 and Hawkins County for 1830, but I can only name daugher Sally Smith and probably son Peter Smith. Bryant and Molly were living with Sally and her children in 1850 in Marshall County. Peter, wife Rachael and children, Wiley, Bryant, Peter annd Isaac were in Marshall County also. Sally's children were Virginia, Thomas, Campbell, Mary Ann, Nancy, Bryant, Dolly, George and John. Bryant died as a child. Mary Ann and Nancy married Thrasher brothers, Thomas and Elias, respectively. Virginia married Alex/Charlie Southerland; Campbell (Cam) married Melinda Jane Miller; Dolly married Marion Noojin, John married Mary Catherine Powell. Thomas and Georbe both died Violently; neither was ever married. (Letter of Charlie White to Jane Beekman, dated Feb. 11, 2000)-Rootsweb
