  • Notes
    • Dear Jackie,
Several sources in the library indicate that Rufus Smith has been regarded as the founder of Smith's Landing. A newspaper clipping from 1993 when the name was being changed from Cementon back to Smith's Landing quoted the Catskill town historian, Betty Larson:
"According to town historian Betty Larson, Rufus Smith arrived in the area in question in 1813 and built docks and a store. He was a Connecticut Yankee who had come up the Hudson River in 1779 and also purchased property along the Kaaterskill and High Falls area." Dates here do not agree with those gven below.
A fuller version appeared in the society's publication, The Quarterly Journal, vol. 3 issue # 1 Spring 1979; the article, "Smith's Landing" was prepared by Elsie and Barbara Van Orden, a mother and daughter, who lived in the Embought section of Catskill, not far from Smith's Landing:
"Rufus Smith, for whom Smith's Landing was named, was born in Connecticut on October 30, 1782. He came to Greene County with a least three family members--his father, Comfort Smith, and his brothers George and Rowland, all of whom became property owners in the area of Great Falls (High Falls) and the Cauterskill Clove.
Rufus Smith married Christina Trumpbour; they became heavy property owners. In 1822 Rufus purchased land, including a dock on the Hudson River, from the Musier family. Rufus and Christina, with their infant daughter, Catherine, moved to Smith's Landing in 1835. They lived in a large brick house near the dock until his death in 1859.
Strangely enough, while the other early families, including the Trumpbours, the Musiers and the Gardners all had private burying grounds which still exist, none can be found for the Smiths. This would seem to justify the placement of their remains in the Asbury Methodist Church cemetery. There is a tombstone in the Asbury cemetery for Rufus Smith, and the dates on it read '1782-1859'."
Thank you for contacting the Greene County Historical Society.
