    Notes
    • John Smith, born @ 1775 in Virginia (birth place/date taken from the 1850 census for Garrard County, KY); died 1 July 1853 in Garrard County, KY (death date taken from the probate jacket for his estate in the Garrard County, KY records/death place is presumed as he lived and is buried in Garrard County). On 16 January 1806 in Garrard County, KY, John Smith married Frances (Frankie) Hundley/Hunley [she was married using her given name "Frances" and she appears on the 1850 census that way -- but she appears as "Frankie Smith" on the probate jacket for her late husband's estate in the Garrard County, KY probate records and so we know that "Frankie" was her nickname.] As to John and Frances (Frankie) Hundley Smith's children: because the estate papers from John Smith's probate jacket in Garrard County, KY are missing, we do not have a will where John Smith named his surviving children and gave us clues as to the identity of any who may have predeceased him. Therefore, we have attempted to determine their children from censuses and other records, and have concluded that there were at least nine children -- six sons and three daughters. We have not identified them all, but we have identified the following as their children: Mary Smith, born @ 1807 in Garrard County, KY; Hiram Smith, born @ 1814 in Garrard County, KY; Peyton West Smith, born 19 March 1826 in Garrard County, KY, died 21 June 1890 in Garrard County, KY (see below); and Nancy Smith, born @ 1830 in Garrard County, KY. We believe that it is probable that the following were also their children: Brady Smith born @ 1809 in Garrard County, KY; and/or Merrill Smith, born @ 1810 in Garrard County, KY. The married names of two of the daughters may have been "Vaughn" and "Burrows" as John Smith's widow (Frances/Frankie Smith) had two Vaughn children (ages 5 and 4) and one Burrows child (age 8) living with her in 1860 (as well as on Smith child -- age 17). We think these were probably grandchildren.

  • Notes
    • Peyton West Smith, born 19 March 1826 in Garrard County, KY; died 21 June 1890 in Garrard County , KY. Between February 19-22, 1849 in Garrard County KY, Peyton West Smith married his first cousin, Frances (Fannie) West [her married name at the time of this marriage was "Marksbury" as she had been married a year or so earlier in Garrard County, KY to James Marksbury who died soon after their marriage. Frances West was born 11 January 1827 in Garrard County, KY, and died there on 28 May, 1884; she was the daughter of Peyton West and his wife, Rebecca Hundley/Hunley (sister to Peyton W. Smith's mother, Frances Hundley/Hunley Smith), so Peyton West Smith was named for his wife's father, and Frances West Smith was named for her husband's mother!] Peyton West Smith and his wife, Frances West [Marksbury] Smith had the following children: John Thomas Smith, born 12 December 1849 in Garrard County, KY, died 1 August 1899 in Johnson County, TX (see below); Andrew R. Smith, born 19 October 1853 in Garrard County, KY, died 26 October 1921 in Johnson County, TX; Peyton West Smith, Jr., born 4 September 1857 in Garrard County, KY, died 27 December 1922 in Johnson County, TX; and Mary R. Smith, born @ 1862 in Garrard County, KY, married in Garrard County, KY after 1880 and died in KY after 1880. We know of only one other child (a boy named Joseph Smith) born in September 1851 (approximate) who died at the age of 11 months on 26 August 1852. It appears that Andrew R. Smith never married; but Peyton West Smith, Jr. did marry (probably in Johnson County, TX) and had children (including Della, Frances I., John T., an unnamed infant boy and Lillie B).
