    • Ebenezer SMITH was born 31 Jan 1739 in Barnstable, MA – he died in Galway 1 Feb 1832 aged 93y 1d. He married in East Haddam, Middlesex Co., CT Rhoda BEEBE on 23 Mar 1753. They were the parents of 10 children. I believe I have found 5 of them.
      1. Ahira – b. 1764 mar. Sarah Gates and Rebecca Cahoon – moved to Jefferson Co., NY
      2. Eli – 1766 – 1848 – Mar. Martha (Rev. War)
      3. Elihu B. – 1771 – 1862 - Mar. Betsey Bishop Moved to Prattsburg, Steuben Co., NY 1820 (on 1820 through 1860 census)
      4. Asa – 1774 – 1834 Mar. Betsey Hinman (prob. Galway) moved to Jefferson Co., NY
      5. . Pettit Smith –

Sources are Hamilton Childs Gazetteer of Jefferson Co., NY – Galway Village Cemetery records – DAR Rev. War Graves - Prattsburg Cemetery records – East Haddam marriage records – Henry C. Ritchie’s Saratoga Co. Families.

In the early Saratoga History book it states that the first town meeting in Galway was held at the Smith and Stillwell Store. In Ritchie’s notes he lists Eli, Elihu, Ahira and Pettit are in the Galway Store with the dates which are about 1810. I can find no family connection to the Stillwell family.

In searching Barnstable Town Records, I find an Ebenezer Smith born 8 Jan 1739 to Daniel Smith and Abigail Jones. Have tried to find a connection between this Ebenezer and the one in Galway – even though the birthdate is 23 days off. I am finding quite a few clues – First The children listed for Daniel and Abigal are:
      1. Ignatius Smith - bn. 1726 – Mar. Susannah Howland They moved to East Haddam abt. 1759 where their 3rd child was born – remaining 5 children were also born there – Sounds reasonable that Ebenezer would be in the area with his brother.
      2. Mercy Smith – 1731 – nothing know about her
      3. Polycarpus Smith - mar. Dorothy “Dolly” Skinner – lived in Colchester, New London, CT where children were born (according to haven’t verified this with town records. He was later found in Canaan Center, Columbia Co., NY (1779 Albany Tax Records) He moved to Oneida Co., NY where he died
      4. Ebenezer Smith – bn. 8 Jan 1739
Since Saratoga Co. wasn’t formed until 1791 – Ebenezer would have been in Albany Co. before this. According to the DAR record of Louise Clawson Siggins – GGgranddau. of Ebenezer - ] Ebenezer Smith (1739-1832) served as private and corporal in Capt. John Salsbury's company, Col.William Whiting's regiment, Albany County, New York militia
On the 1779 Albany Tax List – I find an Ebenezer Smith listed in Capt. John Salsbury beet – Kings District - I also found Polycarpus on the same list on Capt. Kellogg’s beet. According to the record – this area later became Columbia Co –

In the 'The Kelloggs in the Old World and the New' Page 268 it states that Rhoda Smith, born 4 Nov 1773 in Caanan, Columbia, NY dau. Of Polycarpus Smith and Dolly Skinner married Martin Kellogg of Galway – son of Asa Kellogg of Galway. Book also says that Martin was a merchant in Galway for several years. They moved to Oswego Co.
I find Asa Kellogg near Ebenezer on the census –

Ebenezer must have lived in Massachusetts for a time also – the only child I have found living in 1855 for the state census was Elihu – he states he was born in Mass.

I now intend to search Land Records – have some ordered from Steuben Co., but will now order them from Albany also.

An added bit of information – Polycarpus Smith’s great granddaughter Catherine Curtis Spencer married Brigham Young Jr. in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1855. She arrived in Salt Lake on 20 Sept 1848 with Brigham Young’ s company
