  • Notes
    • From the Research of Linda Smith Cheek
I have degaren tin picture of James S. Smith and his first born son, Oliver H.C. Smith and of James' wife Elsie Elizabeth Wallace Smith.

James Sewell Smith was a School Teacher and Farmer.

Ancestry has my James S. Smith listed with a picture of supposedly his tombstone. This is not this James S. Smith. I saw his tombstone in early 1970's at Zion Methodist Church in Easley, SC. It has been destroyed. His wife is also supposedly buried with him.

Cliff Smith told Linda Smith Cheek in 1970 that James S. Smith could play a musical instrument and sing. (piano)

James S. Smith's father born SC mother in TN

James S. Smith was born 1809 TN and then his parents moved to Georgia where his father John died June 1822 administered by Daniel Ford his brother in law. His mother Elizabeth came to SC after her husband died and had her last child William Tucker Smith b. 1823 Greenville Co SC. James married in Laurens SC to Elsie Elizabeth Wallace and had issue in Greenville Co SC, then James moved to Habersham Co GA where his last two children were born in 1848 and 1850 then back to Pickens Co SC for the 1850 census.

James Smith never owned land that I(Linda Smith Cheek)can find until about 1870. His land joined where the First Baptist Church was built (now Masonic Temple) and width to the Easley City Cemetery. Length on the south down Brushy Creek and on the north to Dacusville SC. The tracts of land were not very wide but long. I think he may have inherited this land from his father in law: James Wallace? who is documented in this area of Easley. The old home places of James and his son John Bennett Smith have been torn down in 2015. I have pictures of these two home places. This is where my grandfather Walter Smith was raised by his mother. Cliff Smith a 1st cousin to my grandfather gave me a copy of the family Bible and told me (Linda Smith Cheek) much about this family.
