    • Robert was recovering from surgery in a nursing home. He was struck by a van on Christmas night in front of the nursing home, after he had fallen while crossing the street. He died from head trauma.

    • Robert (Bob) had many hobbies over the years. He met his wife, Bobbie when they both played in the Percussion section of the Central High School band in Evansville, IN. He remained a music lover all his life and had a large collection of Jazz albums and CDs. He was a private pilot for several years and he had an extensive library on Aviation History. He also had a passion for foreign cars, especially Porsches. He was a prolific writer, mostly unpublished, with the exception of a play written for the Northminster Presbyterian Church Players. He was an avid reader of literature, science fiction, history and archeaology. Robert was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 40.

      SMITH, ROBERT WALTER, died Dec. 25, 2000 after being struck by a car while crossing the street. He had suffered from Parkinson's Disease for 27 yrs.

      He retired from McDonnell Douglas in 1985, where he had worked for 26 yrs. as a Mechanical Engineer. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1947 - 1951, where he played drums in the Paris Island Drum & Bugle Corps. He was stationed on the U.S.S. Coral Sea from 1948 - 1951.

      He was an active member of Northminster Presbyterian Church for many yrs., where he served as an Elder and was one of the organizing members of Northminster Players Theater Group.

      He obtained his private pilot license in 1954 and enjoyed many yrs. of flying with his friends. In his healthier yrs., his many hobbies included boating, swimming, riding his motorcycle, playing music and writing. In his later yrs. , he continued his interest in history, science, politics, aircraft and automobiles. Above all, he maintained his sense of humor and dignity throughout his illness.

      He is survived by his wife, Bobbie D. Smith; his children Elizabeth Gail Walker and her husband Brian J. Walker, Karlton W. R. 'Corky' Smith and his wife Teresa M. 'Terri', Aaron P. F. Smith and his wife Cheryl A.; his grandchildren, Heather E. Manne, Allison G. Walker, Eric B. Walker, Rachel M. Smith and Adam P. F. Smith; he is also survived by his mother Mabel E. Smith; his sister Marcia E. Grabert and brother Marvon L. Smith; several aunts, nieces, nephews and a large circle of friends; he was predeceased by his father Walter Roberts Smith and his grand daughter Brittany Kristine Smith.

      Memorial services will be held at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1570 Chambers Rd., at 5:00 p.m., Fri., Dec. 29. Interment will be the following day at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in the memory of Robert W. Smith, to the American Parkinson's Disease Association, Box 8111, 660 S. Euclid, St. Louis, MO 63110.
