WILL 1805  Greenville, SC, USA Find all individuals with events at this location
Will filed in Greenville County, SC. He lived in Laurens County from the records and apparently moved to Greenville just before he died or he owned property in both counties. His estate was very large. It was administered January 6, 1805, in Greenville County, SC. No children were named in the estate papers. Appr. by John Arnold, Joseph Thompson and Wm. Dunklin. Kitt's wife's name was Temperance. In the Laurens County deed she was named Ann, so I assume her name to be Temperance Ann. I believe she was a second wife. (Notes by Linda Smith Cheek, GA).
South Carolina, Greenville District, by John Thomas, pro Esq. Ordinary of said District to John Arnold, Joseph Thompson and William Dunklin, these are to authorize you to repair all such parts and places in this district as you shall be directed unto by Temperance Smith, Adm. of the goods, rights and credits of Kitt B. Smith, dec'd, wheresoever any of the goods and chattels of the said deceased are within the said parts and places and there view and appraise the same, being first duly sworn to make a true and perfect inventory and appraisement thereof and cause the same to be returned under your hands unto the said Adm. within sixty days from the date hereof: January 6, 1805, in the 30th year of American Independence. Sig. J. Thomas.

Benjamin Arnold, Esquire, is hereby required to qualify the above appraiser and certify the same on the back of this warrant. I do hereby certify that the within named John Arnold, Joseph Thompson and William Dunklin were sworn as appraisers of the estate of Kitt B. Smith, dec'd. February 15, 1806, Sig. Benjamin Arnold.

An account calculation and reckoning of the cash paid and received of the estate of Kitt B. Smith dec'd, from the 21 day of February 1806 to the present date by the Adm. of the estate. Greenville County, SC, Adm. and Estate Apt. 7, file 431.

In the Court of Ordinary, September 18, 1807 The executors. of the estate of Kitt B. Smith made a yearly return of said estate up to this date. Greenville County, SC, Journal of the Ordinary.

In the Court of Ordinary, January 24, 1808. The Adm. of the estate of Kitt B. Smith came forward and made a final settlement of said Estate. She having produced receipts and sufficient vouchers for the same. Sworn to the 21 January, 1808. signed. Temperance Smith. Greenville County, SC, Journal of the Ordinary.

(NOTE by Linda Smith Cheek, GA: With returns being made until 1808, it appears that Kitt B. Smith had a minor child or children when he died in 1804. If this child(ren) turned 21 in 1808, it would have been born in 1787.) There is no clue to the maiden name of Kitt B. Smith's wife, Temperance Ann Smith, listed in his estate in Greenville County, SC, in 1805/6. Kitt's family was associated with the Young--Strange--Posey--Hollingsworth--Wilson--Toney, and many other early SC families.)
