  • Notes
    • Hiram Smith was born in Tompkins County, New York, November 9, 1808. At the age of the age of twenty-five he was converted and united with the Methodist Church; and for more than sixty years was a consistent member. During the war, although, well along in years, he served three years in a Wisconsin regiment; he always had a deep interest in political matters, and often expressed the wish that he might live to see another election. For the last five years he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Pitcher, who tenderly cared for him in his last sickness. He died Sunday, October 7, lacking but a month of having reached his eighty-sixth birthday. His funeral services were held Tuesday, at the home of Mrs. Pitcher, conducted by Rev. N. E. Chapman, and he was laid to rest in the Shell Rock cemetery-Shell Rock News Oct 12 1894
